Working with the Community

The three keys areas of our work below encapsulate our wish to be part of the Community rather than working in isolation. There is more to business than just profit and our staff want to feel fulfilled as a result of the significant time they spend at work. This can come from a sharing of skills and ideas with others.

Some of our activities have been relatively passive:

5th Annual West of Edinburgh Business Lunch

We have also established a Sportman's Lunch fundraising event for Prostate Scotland.  Arrangements are already underway for the lunch that is scheduled for 26 November 2010.  If you are interested in a table, please contact Ross McKay.

4th Annual West of Edinburgh Business Lunch

Our 4th Annual West of Edinburgh Business lunch took place in November 2009 and again was hailed as a success. The speakers this year were Peter Brown and Sandy Strang and both entertained the largest number of guests we have had when holding these lunches at Turnhouse Golf Club.

The table hosts this year were Lloyds Bank, Electracom, J & C Cowe Plumbers, George Nicolson Decorators, Generation Hire, Saltire Catering, Williams De Broe and Johnston Smillie.

The raffle and auction assisted in raising £4000 for Prostate Scotland.  This year’s total is the highest yet and takes the total that we have given to charity directly through these lunches in 4 years to more than £12,000.

David Miller is Cycling to Paris!

In support of The Childhood Eye Cancer Trust (CHECT), Johnston Smillie director, David Miller has decided to cycle to Paris. Cycling with his daughter Rowan and three other teammates it will be a feat of 300 miles over four days.  Day one will start bright and early in London and end with an overnight ferry ride to France, followed by three more days of cycling until they reach Paris.

The Childhood Eye Cancer Trust supports those with retinoblastoma and is especially important to the Miller family. Rowan suffered from retinoblastoma at the young age of three and the family now want to help provide vital support for patients and their families affected by the disease.

For the opportunity to sponsor David, Rowan and their team you can visit http://www.justgiving.com/rowans-riders

Our Green Credentials

Johnston Smillie is currently working towards becoming a paperless office.  In an effort to reduce paper waste and limit our impact on greenhouse gas emissions (not to mention save trees!) our staff, all of whom have dual screens,  are trained in using an online document management system which attempts to eliminate the need for paper.

A  Bike to Work scheme is currently  being introduced asking staff members to reduce their carbon footprint by choosing to cycle to work instead of drive.  What a great way to stay fit and healthy as well!
